BLUE AND GOLD MACAW
Ara ararauna
HABITAT: Rainforest
STATUS: Threatened
DESCRIPTION:
Blue and Gold Macaws often congregate in large flocks, though usually pair up with a mate or buddy.
The species is still relatively plentiful through much of its home range, though deforestation is taking its toll on the overall numbers of these magnificent birds. They have disappeared from some parts of their original range.
These are one of the largest types of macaw. They can grow up to 90cm (35 inches) in length and can have a wingspan of 110cm (43 inches).
Like many species of parrot they have a very long life span and some individuals have been recorded as living for 80 or 90 years.
