CONSERVATION

SAVING TOMORROW'S WORLD ... TODAY!

  • EDUCATION: THERE IS ALWAYS MORE TO LEARN - In the ongoing battle of conservation, education is one of our greatest weapons.
  • RESEARCH: KNOWLEDGE SAVES LIVES
The more we study animals, the more we can understand their needs in the wild.
  • BREEDING PROGRAMMES: GIVING ANIMALS A FUTURE
The breeding of rare species in captivity can mean the difference between endangered and extinct.
  • FUND-RAISING: PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THEM
Practical conservation work can only be made possible with financial support. With your help we raise money for a variety of environmental projects.
We are proud of our high standards of conservation. Here are just some of our many achievements:
RED SQUIRREL
Working in association with the Welsh Mountain Zoo, we are breeding youngsters which then join the UK breeding release programme, boosting the population of Britain's only native squirrel.

BRITISH BUTTERFLIES
We support the Essex Biodiversity Project by breeding rare Purple Emperor butterflies which are then released at a secret location in Essex.

MARBLED POLECAT
We are one of only a handful of zoos worldwide keeping and breeding these beautiful little creatures which are threatened with extinction in the wild.
RING-TAILED LEMUR
We hope that our troupe of lemurs will breed when they are a little older. In the meantime they are ambassadors for their species, gaining interest in the threats they face in their native Madagascar through educational keeper presentations.
OTTERS
Our fund-raising campaign, Splash Out for the Otters, helps to finance the important conservation work of the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF) assisting all 13 species of otter around the world.
PARROTS
Our impressive collection of parrots includes many rare and endangered species. We support and promote many psittacine organisations, participate in breeding projects and provide information and advice on the care of parrots kept as domestic pets.
