Tropical Wings Zoo A World of Wildlife, Family Friendly Zoo in Essex

 FARMYARD ANIMALS

Shetland pony Dylan the goat at Tropical Wings

We have both pygmy goats  and Boer goats (like Dylan the Boer on the right here).  Pygmy goats are small but strong.  They are usually good natured and should not be kept alone.  Boer goats are a larger variety and their breed is a relatively recent introduction to this country, originating in South Africa.

Our Shetland ponies, Goldie, Ruby and Pye, can be found either next to the goat paddock, or sometimes they might be grazing in the back meadow, which is the very last stop at the park, beyond the otters.

Shetland ponies, named after the islands where they originated, are Great Britain’s smallest breed of pony, and probably also the oldest breed. They are hardy little animals and, relative to their size, they are stronger than any other horse or pony.

They can be found all over the world and many distinct breeds of donkeys have evolved.  Our pair live very peaceful lives in this top paddock, and enjoy their regular feeds and grooms.

You can mingle with the chickens at Tropical Wings as they wander about the paddocks and pathways.  We have all shapes, sizes and colours, from the modestly-sized rosecomb (left) to the generously proportioned brahma (right).
