GLASSWING BUTTERFLY
Greta Oto
DISTRIBUTION: Central America
HABITAT: Rainforest
STATUS: Not threatened
DESCRIPTION: Glasswing butterflies get their names from the transparent wings which many biologists believe they use as an adaptation to deceive predators. Since a good part of their wings is transparent they are harder for predators to see.
The males will visit flowers from which they extract alkaloids, and with these they produce pheromones to attract the females.
They have a wingspan of 55-60mm.
