KOI CARP
Cyprinus carpio
HABITAT: Ponds and Lakes
STATUS: Not Threatened
DESCRIPTION:
Koi Carp are a domesticated variety of carp and were first developed in Japan over 200 years ago.
There is an old story which traditionally explains the origins of Koi. It tells of a Japanese Emperor who held a competition to find the most beautiful fish in Japan!
Selective breeding has created many colours, patterns and classifications. The most highly prized fish are often those with symmetrical markings.
Koi carp are not just “big goldfish”, but they are distantly related to goldfish, which are also members of the Carp family.
