RING-TAILED LEMUR
Lemur catta
HABITAT: Forest, scrubland
STATUS: Endangered!
DESCRIPTION:
Ring-tailed Lemurs are diurnal (active during the daytime) and crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) and are partially arboreal. However, unlike most species of Lemur, they do not spend all their time in trees and can often be seen on the ground.
They can grow up to 75cm (30 inches) in length, much of which is the striking black and white tail. This is used for balance and also as a signal to other Lemurs. Scent glands on their wrists are rubbed with the tail which the Lemurs then wave and vibrate to send visual and chemical communications.
The biggest threats to their survival come from loss of habitat and illegal trapping.
