GIANT AFRICAN TRAIN MILLIPEDE
Archispirostreptus gigas
DISTRIBUTION: Africa
HABITAT: Forest Floor
STATUS: Not threatened
DESCRIPTION:
Sometimes known by its native name, Chongololo, this giant millipede can grow to a length of 150-220mm.
Although the word millipede literally means 1000 feet, in reality most millipedes, including this species, only have between 100 and 400 legs. They have a hard shiny exoskeleton which protects them from predators.
They survive on a diet of decomposing plant matter.
