Blue and Gold Macaw

Out and About around the Zoo...

The Bird Gardens

Stepping out from the Tropical House you will find yourself in the first Bird Garden, where most of our exotic Parrots can be found.

We pride ourselves on having some pretty spectacular Parrots, from every corner of the globe within our collection.

Yellow Thighed Caique

We have a wide variety of Macaw species, including Blue & Gold's, Scarlet and Green Winged Macaws (the second largest species in the world). We have stunning Australian King Parrots and many different species of Cockatoos such as the Lesser Sulphur Crested, Citron Crested and Moluccan, all of which are critically endangered in the wild - and species from which we would ultimately like to create a successful breeding programme. We are also fortunate to have two distinct varieties of Hornbill, and a mixed aviary full of beautiful Budgerigars, often overlooked, as being a member of the parrot family!

Raven

Stepping into the second Bird Garden, you will find birds with a much more familiar appearance, here you will encounter Birds of Prey, many of whom are native to the UK and Northern Europe, a very wilful White Stork called Stanley, and a fabulous pair of Ravens - which are without doubt the most intelligent birds to be found within the zoo - and that's a scientific fact!

As well as birds, we also have plenty of mammals for you to meet! So please continue your tour Out and About around the Zoo....

Wild Wings Show

Within, the second Bird Garden you will also find our outdoor flying arena, which is where we hold our daily flying demonstrations, an encounter not to be missed which we like to call our "Wild Wings Show".

Barn Owl in flight

As the name suggest there are plenty of wings to be seen, and it can sometimes be a bit wild, as many of our residents take to the skies, to show you exactly why their natural behaviours make them so special. Marvel at the mischievous intelligence of our Ravens, the silent subtlety and grace of our Barn Owl or the sheer power, speed and presence of our Peregrine Falcon, the fastest living animal on the plant!

White Stork

Note: We would like to remind visitors that our daily bird shows are wind and weather permitting, and cannot always be guaranteed on a daily basis.
