BLACK VULTURE

HABITAT: Woodland, open terrain and coastal areas
STATUS: Not Globally Threatened
DESCRIPTION:
This bird's scientific name describes its colouration, atratus meaning "clothed in black".
It is one of the medium-sized of the 22 types of vulture with a wing span of approximately 1.5m (5 feet).
The black vulture survives on a diet which consists mainly of carrion, but they have also been recorded taking live prey and even fruit and vegetables.
